Anxieties

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a common disorder that includes both physical and emotional expressions. The disorder is characterized with a state of restlessness that stem from pestering thoughts and stress from dangers [both rational and irrational], consciously or unconsciously.

The persons suffering from it will feel overwhelmed and helpless against these circumstances.

Even though routine fear and anxiety has many common features, they are distinguished. The main difference is the source of these feelings. While fear awakens by an actual stimulation that can be pointed out directly, anxiety will usually stem from an inner feeling that cannot always be clearly identified. In most cases, the person cannot even point out the outside stimulation that triggered the chain reaction that leads to anxiety.

In many ways, anxiety is a normal and appropriate rection to stressful situations. Furthermore, the physical reactions we experience during anxiety and fear are essential to our survival.

In the case of actual danger, the adrenaline rush the floods us allows us to escape swiftly or gives us unusual strength to protect ourselves. Having said that, when the anxiety feeling floods a person, without an actual threat occurring, it can lead to the developing of anxiety disorder.

Another distinguishing difference between healthy fear and anxiety is that the fear will rise instantaneously, since the stimulation will come as a surprise. On the other hand, anxiety will usually awaken in the face on an expected stimulation. Meaning, fear rises because of a present threat, and anxiety rises due to a future stimulation. While fear is meant to face the threat by fighting or flighting, anxiety will present a “freezing” feeling in front of an unknown and unchangeable fate.
